How to Make an Etch A Sketch Picture Frame

For my son’s Toy Story birthday party, I wanted a cute way to display a photo of him dressed up as Buzz Lightyear. This DIY Etch A Sketch picture frame was perfect! It was fast, easy and affordable to make.

Here are step by step instructions how to make an Etch A Sketch picture frame.

Supplies

  • 4 x 6 inch rectangular unfinished wood picture frame
  • Red acrylic paint
  • White acrylic paint
  • Paintbrush
  • 2 water bottle caps
  • Yellow adhesive vinyl, letter stickers OR paint *see notes
  • 1 sheet of heavy weight paper or cardstock (optional)
  • Glue

With the exception of the bottle caps, all of the supplies can be purchased from a craft supply store such as Michaels or Hobby Lobby. The bottle caps I used were saved from a couple of Ice Mountain water bottles.

Directions

  1. Paint the entire wood frame with the red acrylic paint and let it dry.
  2. Paint the water bottle caps with the white acrylic paint and let them dry. Then add a second coat if needed.
  3. Apply the Etch A Sketch wording to the top long side of the frame. Make sure it is the side that will be on top when the frame is standing horizontal. (*See notes for options on how to add the wording.)
  4. Glue the water bottle caps to the bottom corners of the frame. I used hot glue, but any craft glue should work fine.
  5. Optional: cut a 4 x 6 inch rectangle from the cardstock to use as a backing for the frame. You can skip this step if your frame came with a backing or if you want to use the frame without a backing.

*Notes

There are several options for adding the Etch A Sketch wording to the frame.

  1. I used my Cricut machine to cut the words out of adhesive yellow vinyl. I found an image of the Etch A Sketch logo online, uploaded it to the Cricut Design Space and then cut it out with the Cricut machine.
  2. Alternatively, you can paint the words with yellow acrylic paint. Print an image of the logo to use as a stencil or use a pencil to free hand the letters before painting.
  3. Lastly, you can use simple yellow sticker letters. This is probably the easiest option, but won’t be an exact match to the Etch A Sketch logo font.
